We can’t wait to settle into our new digs in the heart of Austin’s vibrant 2nd Street District, home to the city’s most exciting dining, shopping, and entertainment destinations. Brimming with culture and activity and walking distance from scenic parks and hike and bike trails, our new hood has a little something for everyone. Read on for just a few of our favorite things about 2nd Street District.
EAT & DRINK
Good BBQ is an Austin staple, and you can find some of the best just a couple of blocks from our residences at Lamberts Downtown Barbecue. There, enjoy some of the best slow smoked BBQ and modern Texas cooking Austin has to offer, all while taking in the ambiance of the restored historic building that houses the restaurant. Be sure to head upstairs to the bar and lounge for nightly live music!
Speaking of Austin staples, this town loves it some tacos, and if you’re new to the area you’ll quickly learn why. At La Condesa, enjoy a modern take on traditional Mexican dishes like ceviches, masa, and of course, taquitos. Not to mention, La Condesa also features the largest selection of 100% blue agave tequila and mezcal in Austin and has a great outdoor patio.
Mention Jo’s Coffee, and most people probably think of their South Congress location, with its famous “I love you so much” graffiti. But, they’ve got a location right in the heart of 2nd Street District, and it’s equally adorable with its sidewalk seating and hand-lettering on the windows. Be careful, because their coffee and breakfast tacos can be addicting.
Get your daily dose of fruits and veggies at Daily Juice, who not only have a delicious selection of made-to-order juices and smoothies but also have a great menu of grab-and-go meals. They’re perfect for those days when you don’t have time to make lunch but want something healthy and satisfying.
The shopping in 2nd Street District is its own unique mix of boutique fashion, trendy shops, interior design hotspots, and a celebration of Austin’s incredible music scene. Your best bet is to stroll the neighborhood on foot and pop your head into every open door. Be sure to check out Luxe Apothetique, a locally-owned resource for fashionable women's clothing, accessories, high-end beauty products, and gifts.
All Austin residents and visitors must check out Austin Rocks at least once for its authentically-Austin mix of music and fashion. After browsing their selection of music-inspired fashion, official Austin City Limits merchandise, and adorable line for “little rockstars” dubbed “Austin Rocks the Cradle,” you’ll be more excited than ever to be living in the music capital of the world.
Pick up some essentials and statement pieces for your proper residence at Hacienda, where global inspiration meets local makers in their beautifully curated selection of home furnishings and gifts. Hacienda also has its own line, featuring Turkish towels; mouth-blown glassware; handmade, recycled leather rugs; and organic beauty products made right here in Austin.
If clean, simple interiors are more your style, check out Design Within Reach, a mecca for modern home furnishings. Here you’ll find everything from beds, couches, and chairs, to lighting, storage, and accessories - all distinctly unique and distinctly modern.
For those quick grocery or beer/wine runs, look no further than Royal Blue Grocery, a high-end specialty market for groceries, prepared foods, local craft beers, and wine, all with an eye towards all-natural, organic ingredients. They even have coffee and breakfast tacos - what more could you ask for?
Austin is an extremely bike-friendly city, and if you don’t have your own, you can easily rent from one of the many Austin B-cycle locations (there is one right at 2nd Street and Lacava!). On a fall day, it’s the perfect way to tour the city and its beautiful bike trails, like nearby Ann and Roy Butler Hike & Bike Trail that winds around Lady Bird Lake.
Catch a flick at locally-owned Violet Crown Cinema, where a mix of independent, documentary, international, and studio films are screened. Here, you’re always bound to find something that will make you think or want to discuss for hours afterwards. Plus, you can bring food and drinks from their bar & cafe - featuring local draft beers, wine, appetizers, and classic fare - into the theater with you.
Austin Proper residents will be neighbors with one of the largest classical ballet companies in the US, Ballet Austin. Keep an eye on their schedule of performances or sign up for one of their dance, fitness, or pilates classes at the Butler Center for Dance & Fitness.
Last but certainly not least, taking in a live taping or performance at Austin City Limits is something every Austin resident or visitor should experience. Home to the longest running music series in American television history, Austin City Limits is not only an important piece of the fabric of Austin’s music history but also a great place to catch some of the most exciting up-and-coming acts (and, of course, legends).
